Papers of the Dickenson family [manuscript], 1864-1912.

Include correspondence, receipts, accounts, essays, and tintype. The correspondence consists of letters from Henry H. Dickenson to his wife Cornelia W. Quarles Dickenson written while on buying trips for his Bickley's Mills store, letters to the Dickensons from the Jessee family, relatives who had moved to Illinois; and general family correspondence. Topics include family news, business instructions, the election of 1868, lack of opportunity in Virginia, farming in Illinois, the return to the states of a family that emigrated to Honduras, an 1873 pension request that includes letters from James Henry Platt; and a request, 1879, from William J. Dickenson to attend the Readjuster convention and fight funderism. The collection also contains accounts regarding the settlement of the estate of Charles C. Dickenson, orders for the Dickenson store at Bickley's Mills, schoolgirl essays, a copy of an 1871 newspaper article on Castle's Woods, Russell County, and a tintype.
